The Best Landscaping Shovel

The-Best-Long-Handled-Gardening-Shovel

Spear Head Shovel SHLF2

Also Called - Spear Head Spade Model SHLF2

Why We Think It Is The Best Landscaping Shovel - Particularly For Digging Holes

  1. This is a long handled version of the spade we like so much.
  2. The longer handle helps with workers that may have back issues and also allows more leverage when trying to pry loose a big rock, or break through roots while transplanting.
  3. The pointed blade makes all the difference in the world when planting or transplanting in poor, rocky soils.
  4. Equally good for initial planting or transplanting. Penetrates deep into tough soils, but the tapered tip makes it a great finese tool for lighting planting and transplating of things like annuals, bulbs, ground covers.
  5. Very well designed and constructed - this is a garden shovel that will last.
  6. At 4 pounds it is an excellent weight for a shovel.
  7. Strong handle - steel reinforced fiberglass - I have never been worried about breaking it.
  8. Fairly priced. This tool could last for decades. No doubt you can spend $10 - $15 less on a decent shovel - but we feel this tool is a well priced, quality investment.

Honorable Mention For Best Landscaping Shovel

1) Corona Tools - AS90300 All-steel Round Point Shovel
Corona-All-Steel-Round-Point-Gardening-Shovel
Why We Like This Shovel
  1. If you have truly terrible soil (shale, heavy rock concentrations) or really work a shovel hard in excavating, trenching, asphalt applications - a quality all-steel shovel will give you the durability and strength you need.
  2. All steel construction including the handle. The handle has virtually no flex, making it a powerful tool for transplanting and digging initial planting holes. An excellent trenching shovel for garden drainage applications.
  3. Lack of flex often "pops" small plants right out of the ground. Can be an effective tool for removing annual and seasonal plants after they're done.
  4. May lack the feedback that a flexible handle can sometimes give a landscaper, but as close to indestructible as possible and at times can bridge the gap between a shovel and a pry bar.

2) Radius Tools - Radius Garden 22511 Root Slayer XL

Root-Slayer-XL-Garden-Shovel
Why We Like This Shovel
  1. Radius isn't kidding - this shovel slices through roots better than any shovel we have ever used. If you transplant frequently, especially medium to large material - this shovel is unbeatable.
  2. Very well built, durable but weighs only 5 lbs. 3 oz. so it is easy to work with for long periods of time and will not fatigue you.
  3. Not a bad general digging tool but we slightly prefer the Spear Head Shovel (above) for it's single pointed tip. The Radius Long-Handle Root Slayer works as a general shovel for digging new holes, trenching, etc., but it excels for people who transplant frequently or have to dig out root balls from last years seasonal plantings.
  4. The long handle is a real back saver if you struggle with back pain while gardening. You get great leverage, with a comfortable amount of flex in this shovel's handle. You can probably break this handle in an extreme prying situation - but I have never felt like I was even close to breaking the handle.
  5. Synthetic rubber grip is quite comfortable.
  6. The step on the top of the shovel is generous and can handle my full weight with ease. The digging power of my weight and pressure and the pointed and serrated edges is impressive.
  7. This is a top quality landscaper's shovel. It's not a great construction shovel unless roots are an issue - but it is a great garden shovel.
